The best school supplies to buy for fall 2020!
Things we never thought we’d do: back to school shop in the middle of a pandemic. But let’s be honest; parents are desperate for school to start again. We want our kids to be safe in school and ready to learn. What are the must-have school supplies for every student?
#1: Hand sanitizer for school
It’s a brave new world, and we need kids to keep germs at bay. But kids are pretty awful at handwashing, and many hand sanitizers are gloppy, squirt too much, or stink too much for kids to use. What to do?
If your child can be trusted with a spray, this version is a great choice. It has a nice lemon scent which doesn’t murder everyone within a ten-foot radius. This travel hand sanitizer also dries much quicker than a gel, so your dirty kid might be more inclined to use it if it doesn’t take eons to dry. Be sure to show your kid how to use it first--get the entire hand wet and then rub until dry. Easier than waving your hands around like a jazzercise instructor for five full minutes.
If your kid is likely to mace everyone, sorry. You’ll need to stick with a traditional gel version to kill germs. This one is our trusted budget go-to. Remember to pick up a full-sized version so you can refill it on the cheap! The per-ounce prices go down the larger the container you buy, but your kid isn’t going to want to lug around a quart of sanitizer.
#2: Insulated water bottles
Kids water bottles are a must this year. Many schools are shutting off water fountains, and the last thing we want is dehydrated children. To keep your kids from turning into beef jerky, you’ll need a stainless water bottle that is insulated. The double-walled features keep the bottle from getting condensation that will leak all over your little one’s Trapper Keeper or whatever.
And don’t forget that water bottles must be easy to disinfect. We recommend simple handwashing with soap and water. The major downside of reusable water bottles is the spout. Many options look cool but are a total beast to clean. Eventually you might find a science experiment inside the lid. Yuck. Look carefully at the spout. If it has too many parts, it can be difficult to get entirely clean.
Our #1 water bottle for big kids and teens is below: it won’t condense all over your kids’ papers. The sport spout is easy to clean and entirely plastic. And best of all, it comes in a bunch of awesome colors for kids and adults alike. And at 27 ounces, your kid won’t come home thirsty.
The downside? It’s pretty big, and could be heavy for younger children. The spout might also be tricky for young hands. If you need a smaller version, we love the one below. It doesn’t hold the same volume, but will be much easier to carry. The top is also much easier for younger kids to open and close.
#3: Kids headphones
Technically, kids won’t need these AT school, but we have to prepare for illness, another shutdown, or a zombie apocalypse. And if there are zombies coming, we don’t want to be listening to iPad sound effects at the same time! We need to focus on survival!
The best kid headphones are comfortable, durable, and lightweight. They can take a beating and keep working. We like over-the-ear headphones for kids because it makes them look like cute DJs.
Elementary-aged kids will love to DJ in these. They are Bluetooth headphones, so no cord will get tangled or wrapped around a neck. They are solid for distance learning and will make it so you don’t have to participate in any more children’s Zoom calls where no one can mute. (Why can’t they mute?!)
For teens, we love this version because they are affordable. No matter what they say, we all know that teens are going to sit on those $300 pair of Beats or Sony's or let the dog eat them or run over them with a car. Sorry. They can get those when they have a job. In the meantime, they will will enjoy the strong bass in these. Also, with the active noise cancellation, they won't have to crank up the volume as high, saving their hearing down the road.
Never before have we awaited a back-to-school season like this year. It is truly unprecedented how much we need and love schools. Godspeed, parents!
